About Valerie

Valerie is the creator of Everyday Mermaid, a series inspired by a cartoon post that mused, “Why aren't mermaids depicted more often as drowning and eating men?”

In most cultural themes, mermaids are depicted as marine creatures of seduction, rather than as monsters to be regarded with caution. Valerie took this theme as a challenge. She kicked around ideas for an adult coloring book with family, friends, and coworkers to create Everyday Mermaid.

Content references are drawn from her family’s military history, feminist humor, pop culture, and highlighting endangered species around the World.

As the series evolved, classic Western art, mechanical engineering, science, and historical facts shaped the compositions of each image.

Explore deeper meanings of how naval warfare conflicts with the natural world in a fantasy setting. Experiment with colors and different media like markers, colored pencils, watercolor paints, or crayons.
